Building the House of the Lord – part 2

Let’s keep on studying the book of Haggai ! Such an interesting book. We have so much to learn about the House of the Lord ! Let’s do it !;-)

Haggai 1.9 :

You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? declares the Lord of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house.

Why do we get so little ? Why are there so many fruits ? Why is the land dry ? Why… why… ???

Question : WHY ?

Answer : Because of my House ! Says the Lord !

Q: WHY ? What’s it with your House Lord ?

A: My House lies in ruins.

Q: WHY ? Why would it be in ruins : we have great church programs and activities…

A: Each of you busies himself with his own house ! In other words, no one is really interested in the House of the Lord.

Therefore what are the consequences ?

Haggai 1.10
The heaven over you is stayed from dew and the earth is stayed from her fruit

Since when does dew come from heaven ? I have no answer to that for the time being… But because everyone takes care of his own comfort, because every one is interested in his own house and his own belongings and his own dreams therefore the dew has not come from heaven. The earth has not brought forth its fruits.

We work for food that does not satisfy and we are wondering why we need more and more.

Isaiah 55.1

Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

Money is not the key to power or to a fulfilled life. Jesus, the living waters is all we need. We have all things in Him !

Isaiah 55.2

Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.

God invites us into His economy !

John 7.38

Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”

Haggai 1.12

They obeyed the voice of the Lord their God…

The people did fear before the Lord…

If we obey the voice of the Lord then we are blessed. But how then shall we obey ? I think we first of all need to HEAR the voice of the Lord and in order to HEAR the voice of the Lord we need to LISTEN to the voice of the Lord and be fed by his WORD. People often think that hearing the voice of the Lord is something spooky that falls on you… NO ! God has spoken, his Words have been written and they are contained in the Bible for us to understand them. If we do not value God’s words we will not grow in maturity.

God gives wisdom to the wise.

Daniel 2.21

He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding;

Salvation is free but sanctification costs everything.

Therefore if we are full of the Word of God, that is if we meditate his Word, then we will start HEARing his voice. Our thoughts will only tell us what we are full of. James tells us that it is not enough to HEAR the Word of God. We also need to OBEY his Word.

Haggai 1.13

I am with you says the Lord

Just after OBEYing the Word of God and FEARing God there is a promise : God is with us ! He is in us ! He is not against us ! He is against us when we are disobeying, but then he is still with us because his unconditional love causes Him to chastize us for our good. Those that the Lord does not chastize are bastards.

Hebrews 12.7-13

It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live?

For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees,

Haggai 1.14

The Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel… and Joshu !

Perfect example of collaboration

Psalm 25.10

All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.
